It also provides a dedicated space for grilling, keeping the mess and smoke away from your indoor kitchen.

Not only does an outdoor BBQ kitchen enhance your cooking experience, but it also adds value to your home. Outdoor kitchens have become increasingly popular in recent years, and they can significantly increase the overall value of your property. Additionally, having an outdoor BBQ kitchen creates a space for entertaining and brings people together, making it the perfect spot for social gatherings.

Investing in an outdoor BBQ kitchen also allows you to expand your culinary skills. With the right equipment and tools, you can experiment with different cooking techniques and recipes that are best suited for outdoor grilling. From slow-smoked ribs to perfectly seared steaks, the possibilities are endless.

In summary, having an outdoor BBQ kitchen provides a range of benefits, including enjoying the outdoors, adding value to your home, and expanding your culinary skills. It’s a worthwhile investment that will enhance your cooking experience and create a space for unforgettable gatherings.

Types of Outdoor BBQ Kitchens

Outdoor kitchens can range from modest setups with a storage cabinet for cooking utensils to elaborate designs with a grill, refrigerator, sink and dining space. In either case, your garden will gain an outside ‘chamber’ that serves as a comfortable meeting place. The three kinds are listed below for your consideration:

Movable Outdoor BBQ Kitchen

A wise choice for compact areas that can serve as both a hub for gardening and a place to have cookouts simultaneously. Start with a portable gas or charcoal grill that has heavy cast-iron or stainless steel grates and a grease trap that is simple to clean. Add a mobile cart with shelves for additional storage and work area. Purchase a clip-on grill light to prevent serving burgers tartare.

Prefab Outdoor BBQ Kitchen

For those with greater square footage and money to spend, an all-in-one choice. A 5-foot island with a tile counter, a drop-in gas grill and access doors for a propane tank are often part of the standard setup (pictured). Orderable extras include granite countertops, a refrigerator, and LED lighting. On delivery day, DIYers can start cooking with a prefabricated island.

Custom Outdoor BBQ Kitchen

Whether designed by a professional or a handy homeowner, a built-in-place kitchen offers integrated appliances, storage, and counter space, as well as the greatest degree of freedom in terms of blending the kitchen’s materials and design with its surroundings. A wider floor plan, enough lighting, underground utilities, and a pergola-style canopy increase comfort but also increase the cost.

Considerations before you start building an Outdoor BBQ Kitchen

Do you require a licence?

For Outdoor BBQ Kitchen islands, certain locations don’t require one. However, use a mobile kitchen with a rolling grill, a cart, and an outdoor extension wire for electricity to remove any uncertainty and guarantee that your project won’t result in an extra cost.

Power requirements

Typically, the outdoor kitchen receives its power, water, and gas lines from the house’s service. Plans for the eating and cooking areas should include electrical outlets in addition to power for the kitchen’s lighting and refrigerator.

Prepare in advance to avoid fires

How to be sure your new cook centre won’t put you or your house in danger:

Grill

Build in storage for a fire extinguisher, and place it at least 10 feet away from combustible objects like wood siding, deck rails, and tree branches.

Grill

Position it at least 10 feet from combustible materials, such as wood siding, deck rails, and tree branches, and build in storage for a fire extinguisher

Gas

Look for leaks in the line. Combine 2 parts water and 1 part dish soap. Apply the solution with a brush to the connection and hose fittings. Don’t fire the grill before turning on the gas. A leak exists if more bubbles start to appear. Replace the hose and fittings after first trying to tighten the fittings.

Electric

GFCI outlets must be used, and it’s a good idea to place the kitchen on a separate circuit that can be easily accessed from your home’s control panel. Because they can withstand UV exposure and extreme temperatures, only utilise extension cords, fans, and lights that have Underwriters Laboratories (UL) outside ratings.

Planning your outdoor BBQ kitchen layout

Before diving into the world of outdoor BBQ kitchens, it’s essential to plan your layout carefully. Consider the available space in your garden and determine the best location for your kitchen. Take into account factors such as proximity to your indoor kitchen, wind direction, and any existing structures or landscaping that may impact the layout.

When planning your outdoor BBQ kitchen layout, it’s crucial to consider the three main zones: the hot zone, the cold zone, and the wet zone.

Hot Zone

The hot zone is where the grill and other cooking appliances will be located. This area should be well-ventilated and have ample space for food preparation.

Cold Zone

The cold zone is where you’ll store your beverages and ingredients that require refrigeration.

Wet Zone

The wet zone is where you’ll find the sink and any other water-related features, such as an ice maker or a mini-fridge.

In addition to the three main zones, you’ll also want to consider other important elements of your outdoor BBQ kitchen, such as storage space, seating areas, and countertop space. Think about how you’ll use the space and what features are essential to your cooking and entertaining needs.

To ensure a functional and aesthetically pleasing layout, it’s a good idea to consult with a professional designer or contractor such as All About Outdoor Living who specialises in outdoor kitchens. They can help you make the most of your available space and provide valuable insights into the best materials and layout options for your specific needs.

By carefully planning your outdoor BBQ kitchen layout, you’ll create a space that is not only functional but also visually appealing. It will be a place where you can effortlessly prepare delicious meals while enjoying the company of your friends and family.

Choosing the right outdoor BBQ kitchen

Pick an outdoor kitchen design

Make sure the design you select fits your lifestyle and can carry everything you need in the kitchen, especially the grill! Here are some common fashions to take into account:

Traditional

A mortared brick and stone base is a traditional form of masonry. Select a material and pattern, like this running-bond brick pattern, that mirrors your foundation walls or chimney to connect it with the house.

Contemporary

Smooth lines and polished materials, such as granite and stainless steel, define the aesthetic. Here, horizontal bars of ipe planks give the kitchen depth while also merging it with the natural surroundings.

Rustic

Matte and textural finishes give items a worn-in appearance. Here, the built-in base’s stucco is coloured to resemble terra-cotta and blend in with the hues of the counter’s rough-stone backsplash. Earthy hues merge seamlessly with the nearby vegetation.

Choosing the right building materials for your outdoor BBQ kitchen

Mark Lohman

Options for a built-in base’s materials

  • Cultured stone veneer is lighter and easier to work with than genuine stone since it is easy to cut and may be mortised to a wood, concrete block, or precast concrete frame. It has the same appearance and durability as natural stone.
  • Brick is inexpensive and easy to maintain. requires extensive preparation, and bricks may need to be trimmed to fit. However, it’s a good weekend project if you have some basic masonry abilities.
  • Stucco is a durable, flame-resistant coating that is troweled onto a wood, concrete block, or precast concrete frame.

Cabinetry possibilities for materials

  • Stainless steel complements the grill and is tough and waterproof.
  • Marine-grade polymer has the aesthetic appeal of painted wood but won’t rot and needs no care; just give it a good hose-down.
  • Teak has a cosy, timeless appearance. A clear sealer must be applied once a year to complete.

Countertop possibilities for materials

  • Granite resists weathering, won’t become dirty as quickly as marble, soapstone, or slate, and shouldn’t deteriorate in the sun.
  • Concrete concrete countertops have a sleek, modern appearance, but if constructed improperly, they are susceptible to breaking. Not suitable for DIY. Every year, the container must be resealed.
  • Outdoor-approved ceramic tile offers a variety of styles and colours, is affordable, and is suitable for DIYers. Best in areas where grout lines won’t be harmed by freezing and thawing.

Choosing the right grill for your outdoor BBQ kitchen

When it comes to choosing the right grill for your outdoor BBQ kitchen, there are several factors to consider. The first decision you’ll need to make is whether you prefer a gas grill or a charcoal grill. Each type of grill has its advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to weigh them before making a decision.

Gas Grills

Gas grills are known for their convenience and ease of use. They heat up quickly and allow for precise temperature control, making them ideal for beginners or those who prefer a more straightforward grilling experience. Gas grills also require less maintenance and cleanup compared to charcoal grills.

Charcoal Grills

On the other hand, charcoal grills offer a unique flavour and smokiness that is difficult to replicate with a gas grill. They require more time and effort to heat up and maintain a consistent temperature, but for many grilling enthusiasts, the end result is worth it. Charcoal grills also tend to be more affordable than gas grills, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious grillers.

In addition to the type of grill, you’ll also need to consider other features such as size, cooking surface, and additional accessories. The size of the grill should be based on your cooking needs and the amount of space available in your outdoor kitchen. The cooking surface should be large enough to accommodate the number of guests you typically entertain. Lastly, consider any additional accessories you may want, such as a rotisserie or a side burner.

Ultimately, the right grill for your outdoor BBQ kitchen will depend on your personal preferences, cooking style, and budget. Take the time to research and compare different options, and don’t hesitate to seek advice from professionals or experienced grillers.

Choosing the perfect grill is an important step in creating your dream outdoor BBQ kitchen. It’s the centrepiece of your cooking space and will be responsible for creating delicious meals that will impress your guests. Take a look a the brands that we would recommend below:

First and foremost, a high-quality set of grilling tools is a must. This includes a spatula, tongs, a fork, and a basting brush. Look for tools that are made of stainless steel, as they are durable and easy to clean. Investing in a long-handled spatula and tongs will also help keep your hands safe from the heat.

A reliable meat thermometer is another essential tool for outdoor grilling. It allows you to accurately measure the internal temperature of your meat, ensuring that it’s cooked to perfection. Look for a digital thermometer with a probe that can be inserted into the meat for accurate readings.

In addition to basic grilling tools, there are several accessories that can enhance your grilling experience. A grill brush or scraper is essential for keeping your grill grates clean and free from residue. A grill cover is also a wise investment, as it will protect your grill from the elements when not in use.

Other accessories to consider include a smoker box, which allows you to add smoky flavours to your food, and a grilling basket, which is perfect for grilling delicate foods such as fish or vegetables. Don’t forget about essentials like heat-resistant gloves, aprons, and grill mats to protect yourself and your outdoor kitchen.

Outdoor BBQ kitchen nice-to-have extras

Although they are not necessary, they enhance the enjoyment of outdoor cooking.

  • Sink: It is worth the investment to install plumbing and waste lines in addition to the sink because of how simple and hygienic it is to wash hands and vegetables without having to lug them inside.
  • Dedicated gas line: should be installed if you have natural gas so that you won’t have to deal with a propane tank or run out of fuel while having a barbecue.
  • Second hob: Perfect for side dishes. There may be one included with some grills, but be sure there is adequate room for your pots.
  • Refrigerator: The grill has access to cold beverages and ingredients thanks to an under-counter stainless steel refrigerator.

More Outdoor BBQ kitchen accessories to think about

  • Kegerator: A portable keg that transports guests directly to the grill.
  • Pizza Oven: A real wood-fired dome pizza oven produces a rustic slice.
  • Ice Machine: An ice maker without plumbing uses a water reservoir to produce cubes.
  • Heater: A portable heater powered by gas, you can stay toasty and extend the grilling season. Wheels make moving around simple.
  • Folding bench: A wood potting bench is the perfect bar or service station because it has shelves for storage, a lattice back for hanging utensils and lots of surface space.

Selecting the perfect outdoor BBQ kitchen countertop material

When it comes to selecting the perfect countertop material for your outdoor BBQ kitchen, durability and aesthetics are key. Your outdoor countertop will be exposed to the elements, so it’s essential to choose a material that can withstand the outdoor conditions while still looking beautiful.

One popular option for outdoor BBQ kitchen countertops is granite. Granite is a natural stone that is known for its durability and resistance to heat, scratches, and stains. It’s available in a wide range of colours and patterns, making it easy to find a style that complements your outdoor kitchen design.

Another durable and low-maintenance option is stainless steel. Stainless steel countertops are easy to clean and resistant to heat, stains, and corrosion. They have a sleek and modern appearance that works well in contemporary outdoor kitchen designs.

If you’re looking for a more affordable option, concrete countertops are worth considering. Concrete countertops can be customized with different colours, textures, and finishes to create a unique and personalized look. They are also durable and resistant to heat, making them suitable for outdoor use.

In addition to granite, stainless steel, and concrete, there are other materials such as tile, quartz, and marble that can be used for outdoor countertops. Consider your budget, maintenance requirements, and design preferences when selecting the perfect material for your outdoor BBQ kitchen.

No matter which material you choose, it’s important to properly seal and maintain your outdoor countertop to ensure its longevity. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and sealing, and avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can damage the surface.

Choosing the perfect countertop material is an important decision that will contribute to the overall look and functionality of your outdoor BBQ kitchen. Consider your needs and preferences, and select a material that will withstand the outdoor elements while adding beauty to your cooking space.

Designing a functional and stylish outdoor BBQ kitchen

Designing a functional and stylish outdoor BBQ kitchen is all about finding the perfect balance between aesthetics and practicality. Your outdoor kitchen should not only look great but also be designed in a way that allows for efficient and seamless cooking.

Start by creating a focal point in your outdoor kitchen. This could be the grill, a stylish backsplash, or a beautiful countertop. The focal point will draw attention and set the tone for the rest of the space. Consider using materials, colours, and textures that complement the overall design of your backyard and home.

Next, think about the layout of your outdoor kitchen. The hot zone, cold zone, and wet zone should be strategically placed to ensure easy access and a smooth workflow. Keep in mind the proximity to your indoor kitchen and any existing structures or landscaping that may impact the layout.

Location

An outdoor kitchen can be placed in a great spot on the side of the house. Gas and electrical lines don’t need to be laid in trenches, and the house itself offers some protection for the appliances. Additionally, if yard space is limited, the only place for a permanent kitchen may be in an open area along the house’s wall.

Reasons for placing your outdoor kitchen near your home

Convenience

You won’t have to lug supplies and food across the garden. The recommended distance from your indoor kitchen is 15 to 20 feet. Place chairs so that people won’t be exposed to the sun’s harsh rays to stay cool.

Budget

Running utilities close to the residence is less expensive. outside constructing on an existing patio or deck outside the back door, you can also save money on paving.

Shelter

A house’s walls can serve as a structure and a line of defence at no additional cost. If under an overhang, position the grill close to the edge of the roof to prevent the smokehouse effect.

Storage

Storage is another important aspect of a functional outdoor kitchen. Incorporate ample storage space for utensils, grill accessories, and other cooking essentials. Consider adding cabinets, drawers, and shelves that are weather-resistant and provide easy access to your cooking tools.

Seating

Seating and dining areas are also crucial for creating a comfortable and inviting outdoor space. Whether you opt for a dining table, bar stools, or a cosy lounge area, make sure there is enough seating for your guests. Consider adding shade options such as pergolas or umbrellas to provide relief from the sun during hot summer days.

Lighting

Lighting is an often overlooked but essential element in outdoor kitchen design. Install task lighting above the grill and prep areas to ensure proper visibility during nighttime grilling. Add ambient lighting such as string lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

For areas used for cooking and working, provide task lighting, such as a standing lamp or a clip-on grill light. Ambient lighting in seating areas, such as rechargeable LED tea lights or outdoor string lights, will provide the right atmosphere.

Additionally, for safety, think about installing solar-powered posts or places along the pathways leading to your outdoor kitchen, deck stair riser lights, and an overhead lamp where you enter the house.

Lastly, don’t forget to add personal touches to make your outdoor kitchen feel like a true extension of your home. Decorate with plants, artwork, or outdoor rugs that reflect your personal style. Consider adding entertainment options such as a sound system or an outdoor TV to enhance the overall experience.

By carefully designing your outdoor BBQ kitchen, you’ll create a space that is both functional and stylish. It will be a place where you can enjoy cooking delicious meals while entertaining your friends and family in a beautiful outdoor setting.

Adding Roofing/ Coverage for your outdoor BBQ kitchen

Pergola

The ventilation provided by a slatted or lattice roof can be increased by covering the top with clear acrylic or galvanised metal.

Awning

Awnings start at around £1000 for an 8-foot-wide manually operated model, and they are an easy-to-retrofit choice for a kitchen off the home.

Umbrella

Get a durable, adaptable cantilever type with fibreglass ribs and a 50-pound base to withstand wind for a mobile kitchen; expect to pay £200 to £300 for both. Consider drilling a hole in the counter for the umbrella post if your kitchen is built-in.

Maintaining and cleaning your outdoor BBQ kitchen

Proper maintenance and cleaning are essential to keep your outdoor BBQ kitchen in top shape and ensure its longevity. By following a few simple steps, you can keep your outdoor kitchen looking great and ready for cooking at any time.

Regular cleaning is the key to preventing the buildup of grease, food residue, and other debris. Start by removing any loose debris from your grill and countertops using a brush or damp cloth. For stubborn stains or stuck-on residue, use a mild detergent or a specialized cleaner recommended by the manufacturer.

It’s important to clean your grill thoroughly after each use to prevent the accumulation of grease and food particles. Allow the grill to cool down, then remove the grates and clean them with a grill brush or scraper. Wipe down the interior of the grill with a damp cloth or sponge, and empty the grease tray if applicable.

For stainless steel countertops, use a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth to remove fingerprints and smudges. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the surface. For other countertop materials, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and maintenance.

Regularly check and clean the burners, ignition system, and any other parts of your grill to ensure proper functionality. It’s also a good idea to inspect the gas or propane connections for any leaks or damage. If you’re using a charcoal grill, remove the ashes and clean the ash catcher regularly.

In addition to regular cleaning, it’s important to protect your outdoor BBQ kitchen from the elements. Invest in a high-quality grill cover to keep your grill and other appliances dry and protected when not in use. Consider using furniture covers or storing cushions and other accessories indoors during periods of inclement weather.

By following these maintenance and cleaning tips, you’ll keep your outdoor BBQ kitchen looking great and functioning properly for years to come. Regular upkeep will ensure that you can enjoy delicious meals and memorable outdoor gatherings without any hassle.

Outdoor BBQ kitchen recipes and cooking techniques

Now that your outdoor BBQ kitchen is fully equipped and beautifully designed, it’s time to explore some delicious recipes and cooking techniques that will take your grilling skills to the next level. From mouthwatering steaks to flavorful vegetables, the possibilities are endless.

One classic recipe that is always a hit at BBQ gatherings is the perfectly grilled steak. Start by selecting a high-quality cut of meat, such as ribeye, filet mignon, or New York strip. Season the steak with salt, pepper, and any other desired spices, then preheat your grill to high heat. Place the steak on the hot grill and cook for a few minutes on each side, depending on the desired level of doneness. Let the steak rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute.

For a healthier option, try grilling vegetables to perfection. Cut your favourite vegetables into even-sized pieces and toss them with olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Final tips for creating your dream outdoor BBQ kitchen

The first step in creating your dream outdoor BBQ kitchen is choosing the perfect grill. With so many options on the market, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for you. Here are some important factors to consider:

Fuel Type

The most common fuel types for grills are gas, charcoal, and electric. Each has its pros and cons, so it’s important to choose the one that fits your needs.

Gas grills are convenient and easy to use, but they can be expensive and require a propane or natural gas line. Charcoal grills provide a smoky flavour that many people love, but they can be messy and require more time to set up and clean. Electric grills are great for smaller spaces and apartment balconies, but they may not provide the same flavour as gas or charcoal.

Size

The size of your grill will depend on how many people you plan to cook for and how much space you have. A small portable grill may be perfect for a family of four, while a large built-in grill with multiple burners and a rotisserie might be better for hosting big parties.

Features

Additional features like side burners, infrared technology, and sear stations can enhance your grilling experience but may also increase the cost of your grill. Consider which features are essential for your cooking style and budget.

Once you’ve chosen your grill, it’s time to master the art of temperature control.

All about outdoor living came to see me and produced some amazing ideas, after getting the quotation and drawings I was pleasantly surprised it was in my budget. The workmen who carried out the job were clean and hard working, I can highly recommend this company for doing what they say they will do. Thank you David for overseeing the project and making the whole process comfortable for me.

I set out to update my garden after almost 2 years of lockdown , it was time to turn our attentions to making our garden a great outdoor entertainment space and give it an overhaul and David and his team did a great job.
