A professional outdoor kitchen installation is much more than fitting a BBQ into a garden. It is a carefully planned process that brings together design, layout, appliances, utilities, ground preparation, installation and final safety checks to create a space that works properly from day one.

At All About Outdoor Living, we design and install outdoor kitchens that are built around how each customer wants to cook, entertain and use their garden. Whether you are planning a compact BBQ area or a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with refrigeration, storage, sink, pizza oven and covered seating, the installation needs to be planned correctly before any work begins.

This guide explains how the outdoor kitchen installation process works, from the first consultation and site survey through to appliance selection, groundwork, utility planning, construction and final handover. It will also help you understand why working with an experienced installer is so important when creating a safe, durable and practical outdoor living space.

What Is Included in an Outdoor Kitchen Installation?

An outdoor kitchen installation can include every element needed to turn an empty garden area into a practical cooking, dining and entertaining space. The exact specification will depend on the size of the project, the layout of the garden and how you want to use the finished kitchen, but a professional installation usually involves much more than simply adding a built-in BBQ.

The process typically starts with design planning. This includes deciding where the kitchen should sit, how the layout should work, which appliances should be included, how much preparation space is needed and how the finished area will connect with the rest of the garden. This is one of the biggest differences between a simple BBQ setup and a properly designed outdoor kitchen. You can read more about this in our guide to Outdoor Kitchen vs BBQ Area.

A complete outdoor kitchen installation may include weather-resistant cabinetry, durable worktops, built-in BBQs, pizza ovens, outdoor fridges, sinks, preparation areas, storage drawers, cupboards and waste solutions. These features help make the space easier to use, reducing the need to keep walking back into the house while cooking or entertaining. If refrigeration is part of your plans, our guide to Choosing the Best Outdoor Fridge explains what to consider before selecting a model.

Behind the visible finishes, a professional installation also needs to account for the practical elements that make the kitchen safe and long-lasting. This can include drainage, water connections, gas supplies, electrical points, lighting, ventilation, base preparation and structural support for heavy appliances and worktops. These details need to be planned early so the finished kitchen works properly and avoids costly issues later.

Many outdoor kitchen projects also include a pergola or covered outdoor structure. This can help protect the kitchen from the weather, create a more comfortable dining area and extend the amount of time you can use the space throughout the year. You can explore covered outdoor living options on our Pergolas Surrey page.

For larger projects, project management is also an important part of the installation. Coordinating materials, appliances, trades, timings and final checks helps ensure the whole process runs smoothly from design through to handover.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

Every successful outdoor kitchen installation starts with a detailed consultation. Rather than focusing immediately on products and prices, this first meeting is about understanding how you want to use the space and what you want your finished outdoor kitchen to achieve.

The discussion usually begins with your lifestyle and cooking habits. Some homeowners are looking for a simple space for weekend family BBQs, while others want a fully equipped outdoor kitchen capable of entertaining large groups throughout the year. Understanding how often you’ll cook outside, the number of people you typically entertain and the types of meals you enjoy preparing helps shape the overall design.

Your installer will also discuss your budget, preferred project timeline and any must-have features. This may include a built-in BBQ, pizza oven, outdoor fridge, sink, bar seating, storage, lighting or a pergola. Establishing these priorities early helps ensure the design focuses on the features that matter most to you while remaining within budget.

The consultation also includes an initial assessment of the proposed location. Factors such as available space, access from the house, existing patios, surrounding landscaping, sunlight, prevailing wind and proximity to utilities all influence the best position for the kitchen. Identifying these considerations at the outset helps avoid unnecessary complications later in the installation.

By the end of the consultation, there should be a clear understanding of your goals, a realistic indication of the project’s scope and an agreed direction for the design phase. This provides the foundation for creating an outdoor kitchen that not only looks exceptional but also works effortlessly for the way you live and entertain.

Step 2: Site Survey and Measuring

Once the initial consultation is complete, the next stage is a detailed site survey. This is where measurements are taken and the proposed installation area is carefully assessed to ensure the outdoor kitchen can be installed safely, efficiently and without unexpected issues during construction.

The available space is measured accurately to determine the most practical layout and appliance configuration. At this stage, your installer will consider how much room is needed for cooking, food preparation, dining and circulation, ensuring there is enough space to move comfortably around the finished kitchen without feeling cramped.

Access to the installation area is also evaluated. Delivering heavy worktops, cabinetry and appliances may require clear pathways through the garden or side access around the property. Identifying any restrictions early allows the installation team to plan accordingly.

The existing patio or base is then inspected to determine whether it is suitable for supporting the weight of the outdoor kitchen. Large porcelain worktops, stone surfaces and built-in appliances can be extremely heavy, so the foundations must be level, stable and capable of carrying the load. If required, recommendations can be made for strengthening or replacing the existing base before installation begins.

Ground levels and drainage are equally important. The installation area should allow rainwater to drain away effectively, preventing standing water around cabinetry and appliances. Existing drainage routes, gradients and surrounding landscaping are all considered as part of the survey.

Environmental factors also play a key role in the final design. The amount of sun the area receives, prevailing wind direction, available shelter and the proximity to the house can all influence appliance positioning, seating areas and whether additional weather protection, such as a pergola, would improve year-round usability.

Finally, the installer will identify the most practical routes for gas, electricity and water services. Planning these utility connections before installation begins helps minimise disruption and ensures the finished kitchen is both safe and fully functional.

Step 3: Design, Layout and Workflow

With the site survey complete, attention turns to designing an outdoor kitchen that is both attractive and practical to use. A successful layout isn’t simply about fitting as many appliances as possible into the available space. Instead, it’s about creating an efficient workflow that makes cooking outdoors feel effortless.

Most professional outdoor kitchens are designed around dedicated work zones. The preparation area should provide generous worktop space close to refrigeration and storage, allowing ingredients to be prepared without unnecessary movement. The cooking zone then becomes the focal point of the kitchen, typically incorporating the built-in BBQ, pizza oven or other cooking appliances with sufficient clearance for safe operation.

Once food has been cooked, a serving zone provides a convenient place for plating meals and drinks before they are taken to the dining area. Where a sink is included, a separate cleaning zone helps keep washing up away from food preparation, making the entire kitchen easier to use when entertaining.

Storage is another important consideration during the design phase. Well-positioned cupboards and drawers keep BBQ tools, crockery, utensils, seasonings and gas accessories within easy reach, reducing clutter and making the kitchen far more enjoyable to cook in.

The overall layout should also consider how guests move through the space. Seating and dining areas should encourage conversation without obstructing the cook, while breakfast bars or islands often create a natural gathering point where family and friends can socialise while food is being prepared.

One of the biggest priorities in any outdoor kitchen design is maximising worktop space. Ample preparation areas make cooking multiple dishes significantly easier and reduce the frustration of constantly moving equipment around. Equally important is designing the kitchen so everything you need is close at hand, avoiding repeated trips back into the house for ingredients, utensils or serving dishes.

Taking the time to plan these work zones properly results in an outdoor kitchen that feels intuitive to use, whether you’re preparing a quick family meal or hosting a large gathering.

For more inspiration, explore our guides to Outdoor Kitchen Design Tips for Your Home and Small Outdoor Kitchen Designs.

Step 4: Choosing Appliances and Features

Once the layout has been finalised, the next step is selecting the appliances and features that will bring your outdoor kitchen to life. The right combination should reflect how you cook, entertain and use your garden, creating a space that is practical today while remaining flexible for years to come.

For many homeowners, the built-in BBQ is the centrepiece of the entire kitchen. Available in a range of sizes and fuel types, built-in gas BBQs provide convenience, fast heat-up times and plenty of cooking capacity for entertaining. Others may prefer ceramic grills, which excel at grilling, roasting, smoking and slow cooking, offering exceptional versatility for outdoor chefs. If you’re deciding between different barbecue options, our guide to What Is the Best Outdoor BBQ? explores the main considerations.

Pizza ovens have also become one of the most popular additions to modern outdoor kitchens. Whether you’re cooking authentic wood-fired pizzas, baking bread or roasting meats, a dedicated pizza oven creates another cooking zone while adding a real focal point to the space. If you’re considering adding one to your project, take a look at The Best Outdoor Pizza Ovens Tried & Tested.

Additional appliances can make outdoor cooking even more enjoyable. Side burners provide extra flexibility for sauces, vegetables and side dishes, while outdoor fridges keep drinks and ingredients close at hand without constant trips back into the house. Integrated sinks make food preparation and cleaning significantly easier, particularly when entertaining larger groups.

Storage is another feature that should never be overlooked. Purpose-built outdoor cabinetry provides space for utensils, cookware, gas bottles, crockery, condiments and cleaning equipment, helping keep worktops clear and the kitchen organised. Our Complete Outdoor Kitchen Cabinet Guide explains the different cabinet options and materials available.

Beyond cooking appliances, many homeowners also choose to incorporate bars, breakfast seating, integrated lighting and covered structures such as pergolas. These additions transform the kitchen from a simple cooking area into a complete outdoor living space, allowing you to prepare food, dine and entertain comfortably throughout the day and well into the evening.

Step 5: Planning Gas, Electrics, Water and Drainage

Before any cabinets or appliances are installed, the utility services need to be carefully planned. This stage is one of the most important parts of a professional outdoor kitchen installation, as gas, electricity, water and drainage all need to be routed correctly before the kitchen is assembled. Planning these services early helps avoid costly alterations later and ensures the finished installation is safe, reliable and fully compliant.

Gas supply is often the first consideration. Every built-in BBQ, side burner and gas-powered pizza oven has a specific BTU requirement, so the total appliance load must be calculated to determine whether the existing gas supply is sufficient or whether a larger pipe or additional feed from the property is required. Correct gas line sizing ensures appliances perform as intended without pressure loss, particularly when multiple appliances are used simultaneously.

Electrical planning is equally important. Outdoor kitchens require weatherproof electrical installations using outdoor-rated fittings and suitably protected circuits. Appliances such as outdoor fridges, lighting, rotisserie motors, induction hobs, power sockets and USB charging points all require reliable electrical supplies, while circuits should be protected by appropriate RCD (Residual Current Device) safety protection to minimise the risk of electric shock in outdoor environments.

Where a sink is included, both water supply and drainage need to be incorporated into the design. Fresh water feeds should be routed efficiently to minimise disruption, while waste pipes require suitable falls to ensure effective drainage. Planning these services before installation allows cabinets and worktops to be positioned correctly without compromising storage or appliance layouts.

Lighting should also be considered during this stage. Well-planned task lighting above preparation areas improves visibility while cooking, while feature lighting beneath worktops, inside pergolas or around seating areas helps create a welcoming atmosphere after dark.

Although some homeowners consider carrying out parts of the utility installation themselves, gas, electrical and plumbing work should always be completed by appropriately qualified professionals. Proper planning not only improves safety but also helps ensure your outdoor kitchen performs reliably for many years to come. If you’re weighing up the different installation approaches, our guide to DIY vs Professional Outdoor Kitchens explains the advantages of using experienced installers.

Step 6: Groundworks and Base Preparation

Before the outdoor kitchen can be installed, the area must be properly prepared. Even the highest-quality cabinetry and appliances will only perform as well as the surface they are installed on, making ground preparation one of the most important stages of the entire project.

The installation area should be built on a stable, level base capable of supporting the significant weight of the finished kitchen. Once cabinetry, stone or porcelain worktops, built-in BBQs, pizza ovens, outdoor fridges and other appliances are installed, the combined weight can be substantial. An uneven or unstable base can lead to movement over time, affecting both the appearance and performance of the kitchen.

Many outdoor kitchens are installed onto existing patios, but these should always be inspected before work begins. In some cases, a concrete slab provides the most suitable foundation, while well-constructed paving can also be appropriate if it is level, structurally sound and free from movement. Timber decking may be suitable for lighter installations, although its load-bearing capacity should be assessed carefully before heavy appliances or stone worktops are added.

Drainage is another key consideration during the preparation stage. The finished surface should include a slight fall to allow rainwater to drain away naturally, preventing standing water around cabinets and reducing the risk of moisture-related issues over time. If additional drainage channels or landscaping work are required, these are best completed before the kitchen installation begins.

Preparing the site in advance also helps the installation run far more efficiently. Any excavation, new foundations, utility trenches or patio alterations can be completed before the cabinetry and appliances arrive, allowing the installation team to focus on assembling and fitting the outdoor kitchen rather than carrying out building work around it.

By ensuring the base is stable, level and fully prepared beforehand, the installation process is smoother, the finished kitchen performs as intended and the investment is protected for many years of outdoor cooking and entertaining.

Step 7: Installation Day

Once all planning, design and preparation work has been completed, installation day is where the project begins to take shape. With the groundwork already finished and utilities prepared, the focus shifts to assembling the outdoor kitchen, fitting the appliances and ensuring every component is installed to a professional standard.

Before the installation team arrives, the area should be cleared of garden furniture, BBQs, planters and any other obstacles to provide unrestricted access. This not only protects existing items from accidental damage but also allows heavy cabinets, worktops and appliances to be moved safely into position.

After delivery, each cabinet is carefully positioned according to the approved layout. Rather than fixing everything immediately, the installers will first check the alignment of every unit before making fine adjustments. Adjustable cabinet feet are used to ensure the entire kitchen is perfectly level, even if there are slight variations in the patio or base beneath.

Once the cabinetry has been levelled and secured, the worktops are installed. As these surfaces are often manufactured from heavy materials such as porcelain, granite or stone, they require careful handling and precise fitting to achieve clean joints and a seamless finish.

With the main structure complete, the built-in appliances can then be installed. This includes fitting the BBQ, pizza oven, outdoor fridge, sink and any additional cooking equipment into their designated positions. Utility connections are then completed, allowing gas, electricity and water services to be safely connected and tested by the appropriate qualified trades.

Before the installation is considered complete, every component is thoroughly checked. Cabinet doors and drawers are adjusted to ensure smooth operation, appliances are tested, worktops are inspected for alignment and all visible finishes are cleaned and protected. Any protective films or packaging are removed only once the installation is complete, helping ensure the kitchen is handed over in immaculate condition.

By the end of installation day, what was once a collection of individual cabinets and appliances has been transformed into a fully functioning outdoor kitchen, ready for the final inspections and customer handover.

Step 8: Testing, Safety Checks and Final Handover

Before an outdoor kitchen installation is officially complete, every system should be thoroughly tested to ensure it is safe, fully operational and ready for everyday use. This final stage provides peace of mind that every aspect of the installation has been completed correctly and that the kitchen is ready to perform as designed.

Gas appliances are tested first to confirm all connections are secure and free from leaks. Burners are ignited and checked to ensure they are operating correctly, with consistent flame patterns and appropriate gas pressure across all cooking appliances.

The electrical installation is then inspected. Power outlets, lighting, refrigeration, ignition systems and any other electrical components are tested to confirm they are functioning correctly, while protective devices such as RCDs are checked to ensure they provide the required level of safety for outdoor use.

Where sinks and plumbing have been installed, the water supply and drainage are also tested. Taps should operate correctly without leaks, and drainage should flow freely without standing water or slow emptying. If the kitchen includes built-in ventilation around gas appliances or enclosed cabinetry, this should also be inspected to ensure airflow has not been obstructed during installation.

Once all services have been successfully tested, the installation team carries out a final inspection of the entire kitchen. Cabinet doors and drawers are checked once more for smooth operation, worktops are inspected for any marks or movement, appliances are cleaned, protective coverings are removed and the entire kitchen is prepared for handover in a spotless condition.

The final handover is also an opportunity to show you how everything works. Your installer should demonstrate the operation of each appliance, explain any shut-off valves or isolation switches, provide maintenance and cleaning advice for worktops, cabinetry and appliances, and answer any remaining questions you may have.

This walkthrough ensures you can begin using your new outdoor kitchen with confidence, knowing it has been professionally installed, thoroughly tested and prepared for many years of safe outdoor cooking and entertaining.

How Long Does an Outdoor Kitchen Installation Take?

The length of an outdoor kitchen installation depends on the size and complexity of the project. While some modular outdoor kitchens can be installed in a single day once the site has been prepared, larger bespoke installations typically take longer due to the number of stages involved before the first cabinet is even delivered.

For a modular system with pre-manufactured cabinetry and a straightforward layout, installation is often relatively quick. If the base is already prepared and utility connections are in place, the cabinets can be positioned, levelled, connected together and fitted with appliances in just a few days, depending on the specification.

Bespoke outdoor kitchens generally require a longer programme. Before installation begins, time is needed for consultation, site surveys, design development, appliance selection and ordering bespoke cabinetry, worktops and specialist components. Manufacturing lead times can vary depending on the materials chosen, particularly for custom worktops and made-to-order cabinetry.

Groundworks can also influence the overall schedule. If a new patio, concrete slab, drainage system or utility trenching is required, these works need to be completed before the kitchen installation can begin. Likewise, gas, water and electrical services are often installed in advance to ensure everything is ready when the cabinetry arrives.

The complexity of the project is another major factor. A simple outdoor kitchen with a built-in BBQ and storage will naturally be completed more quickly than a large entertaining space incorporating a pizza oven, outdoor fridge, sink, lighting, bar seating, pergola and multiple utility connections.

Although every project is different, taking the time to plan each stage properly almost always leads to a better result. Careful design, thorough preparation and professional installation help ensure the finished outdoor kitchen not only looks exceptional but also performs reliably for many years to come.

If you’re planning your own project, our guide to Outdoor Kitchens in the UK: What You Need to Know Before Installing explains many of the key considerations before work begins.

How Much Does Outdoor Kitchen Installation Cost?

There is no single price for an outdoor kitchen installation because every project is different. The overall cost depends on the size of the kitchen, the materials selected, the appliances included and the amount of preparation work required before installation can begin.

One of the biggest factors is the size and complexity of the layout. A compact outdoor kitchen with a built-in BBQ and storage will naturally cost less than a bespoke entertaining space incorporating multiple cooking appliances, a sink, outdoor fridge, bar seating and extensive preparation areas.

The choice of materials also has a significant impact on the overall investment. Premium porcelain, granite and natural stone worktops typically cost more than standard finishes, while bespoke cabinetry and custom-built features increase both manufacturing and installation time.

Appliance selection is another major consideration. Built-in BBQs, ceramic grills, pizza ovens, refrigeration, side burners and outdoor sinks all contribute to the final project cost, as does the quality and specification of each product.

Groundworks should also be factored into the budget. If a new concrete base, patio alterations, drainage improvements or utility trenching are required before installation, these preparatory works will form part of the overall investment. Similarly, gas, electrical and plumbing installations can vary depending on the distance from the house and the complexity of the service connections.

Many homeowners also choose to incorporate additional outdoor living features, such as pergolas, lighting, heating and integrated seating, creating a complete outdoor entertaining area rather than simply installing a cooking space.

Because every project is unique, it’s usually more helpful to look at real-world examples than rely on average prices. Why Professional Installation Matters

A professionally installed outdoor kitchen delivers far more than an attractive finish. Correct installation ensures every part of the kitchen is safe, reliable and designed to perform for years in the unpredictable British climate. From gas appliances and electrical connections through to drainage and ventilation, every element must work together to provide a functional and durable outdoor cooking space.

Safety should always be the first priority. Gas barbecues, side burners and pizza ovens require correctly installed gas supplies, while outdoor electrical systems must be protected from moisture and installed in accordance with current regulations. Professional installation helps ensure utilities are connected safely, reducing the risk of gas leaks, electrical faults and future maintenance issues.

Ventilation and appliance clearances are equally important. Built-in barbecues, refrigerators and outdoor cooking appliances all require sufficient airflow around them to prevent overheating and maintain manufacturer warranties. Cabinets, worktops and surrounding structures also need to be positioned with the correct clearances to ensure appliances operate safely and efficiently.

Ground preparation is another area where professional installation makes a significant difference. Outdoor kitchens should be installed on a stable, level base with appropriate drainage to prevent standing water, movement and long-term structural issues. Proper foundations also help protect cabinetry, worktops and appliances from unnecessary stress caused by ground movement or poor installation.

Professional designers also optimise the kitchen’s workflow. Careful positioning of cooking appliances, preparation space, refrigeration, storage and serving areas creates a practical layout that makes cooking and entertaining far easier while reducing unnecessary movement between tasks.

Finally, expert installation improves long-term durability. Correct weatherproof sealing, secure fixing methods, quality workmanship and attention to detail all help protect your investment against rain, frost, changing temperatures and everyday outdoor use, reducing the likelihood of expensive repairs in the future.

We couldn't be happier with our installation by All About Outdoor Living. We had a very particular vision for a really awkward space that was executed perfectly. From the initial design consultation to the final finishing touches, the entire process was seamless and stress-free. Bill who led the groundworks was great to work with. With lots of challenges due to root systems, mature trees/shrubs, drainage issues and uneven ground, Bill and his team worked meticulously to lay porcelain patios, paths and turf, providing solutions for everything. David, Dale and Dean bought the whole space to life with a stunning, bespoke wooden pergola that is a structural statement in itself. And they fabricated an angled kitchen on site with water and power supply, to boldly frame and define a space where nothing is level or convenient. They were a joy to have around, and gave all the attention to detail you could want. The quality of workmanship is outstanding, and the materials used are not only durable but also visually stunning. Our family and friends are truly impressed with the results and we would recommend them in an instant. Cooking and entertaining outdoors has never been this enjoyable. Thank you, All About Outdoor Living, for creating our dream outdoor kitchen space.

I think sometimes, projects like this can be so overwhelming. Although, with David’s advice and wealth of knowledge, he was able to advise and help to design our outdoor kitchen which catered for all our needs and requests and all within our budget too. Thank you!

All about outdoor living came to see me and produced some amazing ideas, after getting the quotation and drawings I was pleasantly surprised it was in my budget. The workmen who carried out the job were clean and hard working, I can highly recommend this company for doing what they say they will do. Thank you David for overseeing the project and making the whole process comfortable for me.

We are very pleased with the outdoor kitchen supplied by David Barnes and All About Outdoor Living. David was of great assistance during the design phase, working with us to review different options and 3D models in our space. He recommended thoughtful options on design, materials and appliances, which now looks great in our garden.

David and Scott were absolute pleasure to deal with from start to finish. The quality of work is second to none, and David is particularly good at advising what will work best for your space and the best components BBQ/Fridge etc to use. Having done so many similar projects they know exactly what tile and granite combinations work best which takes away the stress of deciding. Having had a lots of building work done in the past it was refreshing to witness the project delivered on time and on budget with zero stress. Simple things like materials turning up when we were told they would turn up make a huge difference in this industry. Overall, we have been very impressed and would recommend to anyone looking to have an outside kitchen built for the summer! They really know what they are doing (this is what they do) and are very personable, transparent and easy to do deal with.

I highly recommend All About Outdoor Living. Everything was so easy from start to finish. Supplied and fitted a beautiful pergola. The workmanship from David and Scott was exceptional. Plus two really lovely guys. It was such a pleasure to do business with a company who actually do what they say they will do, and put the cusomer first, very rare these days. You will be in good hands with them.

A big thank you to David and the team at All About Outdoor Living for helping us to bring our outdated garden back to life. They project managed everything from the installation of a new patio to designing and building a lovely bespoke outdoor kitchen and the installation of a new pergola. Their communication was always excellent, and we were kept up to date on progress and delivery times of all materials. It was also all brought in within our agreed budget. We couldn’t be happier with the results.

Couldn’t recommend David and Gavin and their teams highly enough. From start to finish took 2 months with our outdoor patio and kitchen designed and completed on time and in budget in spite of finding an old swimming pool underground which they had to deal with. Great guys to work with and respectful of your property.
So happy with the outdoor kitchen and island that David designed and built for us. Super efficient and very high quality finish. The team were friendly and hard working and went out of their way to do a great job. Highly recommend this company

So happy with the work that David and Scott did. First and foremost, they are really lovely and trustworthy people, very flexible, offering suggestions and tweaks as you move through the process. The key of course is the end product, and David sourced the best materials so we’ve ended up with a really quality outdoor kitchen that fits the space perfectly. Genuinely, couldn’t be happier and would recommend without hesitation. Thanks

David and his team were excellent and helping me install a bbq onto a work surface. I was so impressed with their work that they have completely 3 other jobs for me (brickwork, glass alignment and guttering) and I have asked them to quote on another job. The team are hard working and would highly recommend them.

An excellent experience from start to finish. David is very experienced in terms of site position, planning, seeing potential problems and finding good cost effective solutions. Dale and Dean were a pleasure to have working on site. As a family, we love our outdoor kitchen and cannot recommend it enough. The blinds and pivoting roof makes it a useable space for all seasons. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend David and his team to anyone.
